Vitamin C

Increase in dosage of vitamin C backed

Government researchers say the recommended daily allowance for vitamin C should be doubled or tripled because of the increasing evidence over the past two decades of it's cancer fighting ability.

The current daily allowances were set by the National Academy of Sciences in 1980.

In a April, 1999 paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association,  researchers said the RDA for vitamin C should be raised from 60 milligrams to between 100 mg and 200 mg.

However, Dr. Mark Levine, an NIH researcher said 200 mg is the maximum the body can absorb before it starts expelling the vitamin. Larger amounts can increase the risk of Kidney stones, Levine said.

Note: Once again we see increasing evidence of vitamins role in health. Taking vitamins several times a day increases absorption, and even when some of the vitamin is eliminated much more can be utilized in the tissues. There also is no current evidence that vitamin C causes stones, even though it is still taught in medical schools.   I suggest 500 mg. to 3,000 mg. a day in divided doses. Dr.Fusco
